The Department of Chemical Sciences was among the Departments created at the inception of the University at the beginning of 2016/2017 academic session. The department started with two (2) teaching academic staff and one (1) non-teaching academic staff as pioneer staff. B.Sc. Chemistry and B.Sc. Biochemistry programmes were initiated as degree programmes of the Department in February, 2017, admitting thirteen (13) candidates for Biochemistry and two (2) candidates for Chemistry from among the candidates who scored 180 and above in the JAMB UTME. The B.Sc. Industrial Chemistry programme was recently approved after the NUC verification exercise of October 2018 at the commencement of the 2018/2019 academic session and the Department invites and welcomes candidates into this new programme.

The Department of Chemical Sciences has turned out two sets of graduates. The staff strength of the Department has continued to grow in order to achieve the goals of the Department for the three programmes
