DEPARTMENT'S PROFILE

BRIEF HISTORY

The Department of Mathematical Sciences was one of the departments created in 2017 at the commencement of Anchor University, Lagos. At inception, the department was called Mathematics and Computer Science but this was later changed to Mathematical Sciences. The department had twenty (20) students at the beginning; however, it has grown to a total number of eighty four (84) students. The department began with two (2) teaching academic staff and one (1) non-teaching academic staff as pioneer staff, but, it has increased to ten (10) academic staff and five (5) non-academic staff. Mathematics and Computer Science B.Sc. degree programmes were the two programmes the department started with in February, 2017. The B.Sc. Information Technology programme was later approved by the NUC after the verification exercise of October 2018 at the commencement of the 2018/2019 academic session. The department has well equipped software and hardware laboratories.

VISION

To be a department that prioritises the teaching and training of proficient, outstanding and practice-oriented students who will not only become self-reliant and self-employing but also impact the government, private organisations as well as industries by producing developmental work and rendering services of international standards.

MISSION

OBJECTIVES

The programmes are designed to:

  1. equip the graduates with adequate basic computer and mathematics skills so that they will be able to cope with the challenges of the real world,
  2. provide instructions and training required for our graduates to excel in the fields of Computer Science, Information Technology and Mathematics,
  3. carry out researches that produce publishable and applicable results,
  4. to develop the awareness and appreciation of computing skills and concepts in the students,
  5. to develop links with local industries in order to help them in their efforts to solve their problems by applying computing and mathematical principles, and
  6. to equip the graduates with adequate knowledge of Computer Science, Information Technology and Mathematics for higher studies.
