The Department of Earth Sciences was established in 2018/2019 academic session. It is domiciled in the Faculty of Science and Science Education. The programme in the department takes care of the Earth's structure, properties, processes, and four and half billion years of biotic evolution. Understanding these phenomena is essential to the maintenance of life on the planet. The expanding world population demands more resources; faces increasing losses from natural hazards, and releases more pollutants to the air, water, and land. Sustaining our existence requires scientific understanding of the natural materials and processes linking the geosphere, hydrosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere. Life thrives or degenerates at the surface of the Earth, where these environments intersect. Therefore, the curriculum for Geology and Applied Geophysics programmes has been packaged to provide the scientific understanding of Earth’s surface and subsurface for the purpose of exploring and exploiting the natural resources deposited in the subsurface for economic development. In December 2021, the Department was fully accredited by National Universities Commission (NUC). Presently, the two programmes are being handled by experienced, seasoned and God-fearing lecturers and researchers. The Department of Earth Sciences has the following programmes namely Geology and Applied Geophysics.

VISION

To produce graduates with adequate and broad understanding of the basic concepts of Geology and Applied Geophysics complemented with applications-oriented courses that will advance the productive capacity to enable them contribute to the development of Geosciences locally and globally by solving Earth related problems.

MISSION

To harness available resources, and expertise for the purpose of grooming graduates with godly integrity, and researchers capable of driving innovations with national and global relevance.

OBJECTIVES

To impart the necessary knowledge, attitude and skills that would enable graduates become self-reliant practitioners. To produce entrepreneurs, researchers and scholars in their sub-fields and allied disciplines.

The specific objectives of the programme include:

  1. To give the students an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience in the study of Geology and Applied Geophysics
  2. To provide exposure to a menu of industrial applications of national interest;
  3. To prepare the students for post-graduate studies in Geology/Applied Geophysics or other multi-disciplinary areass.
  4. To inculcate the knowledge and skills needed for self-employment.
