PHILOSOPHY OF THE DEPARTMENT

The University’s mission is anchored on the premise of imparting the necessary knowledge, skills and attitude on the students. Sequel to this, the philosophy of the Department is to produce competent communication and media graduates with godly character, through an industry-friendly curriculum that will help drive capacity building, practical exposure and training, and community-based research that will support the attainment of national and international development goals such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and others.

OUR VISION AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of the programme (BSc Mass Communication) is to train students to become professional journalists, communicators, broadcasters, public relations and advertising practitioners in order to enable them impart positively on political and socio-economic activities both locally and globally.

The objectives of the course include the following:

  • To offer an undergraduate professionally oriented programme for aspiring Nigerian journalists, communicators, broadcasters, public relations and advertising practitioners.
  • To train and/or retrain Nigerian journalists, broadcasters, public relations and advertising practitioners for leadership positions in mass media organisations in Nigeria and the world.
  • To raise and sustain the professional status of journalism in Nigeria.
  • To bridge the divergent perspectives of news gathering and dissemination.
  • To provide Mass Communication students the opportunity of mastering the art of communicating with the masses in multifarious ways whether in writing or broadcasting, Newscast, or writing a speech for the Company Chief Executive Officer (CEO), or writing Advertising or Public Relation copy to sell or promote a product to the masses.
  • To instill in the Mass Communication students the ability to respect deadlines and work under constant pressure.
  • To train and encourage Nigerian Mass Communicators to be effective communicators by being able to think quickly, research creatively and WRITE OR BROADCAST concisely to a mass audience.
  • To train Nigerian media men and women that would act as the trustees of the public trust and be socially responsible to the communities they serve by being accurate, fair, balanced and objective in their reportage of societal issues.
  • To produce Nigerian Mass Communicators who will continue to protect the basic principles of the PEOPLE’S RIGHT TO KNOW as the fourth branch of government or the Fourth Estate of the Realm.
  • It is expected that at the end of the degree programme in Mass Communication, the graduate should be able to differentiate “soft news” from “hard news”, truth from falsehood, and responsible Journalism from irresponsible Journalism.
  • At the end of the degree programme in Mass Communication, it is expected that the graduates should be equipped enough to establish their own newspapers, magazines, public relations and advertising agencies, radio and/or television stations.
