The Department of Mass Communication offers a professionally oriented four-year B.Sc. (Hons) programme, built on the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS). Direct Entry students complete the programme in three years.
Students examine how communication and media work and how they shape society. They learn the history, theories and criticisms of mass media, how to choose the most effective tools and strategies to promote messages, products and programmes, and how the psychology of communication affects audiences.
The programme offers three career sequences — Journalism; Public Relations and Advertising (PRAD); and Broadcast and Film — each with practical sessions, and two compulsory Media Attachment placements at 300 and 400 level supervised by industry professionals.
Graduates are prepared for careers in journalism, public relations, advertising, broadcasting, film and book publishing, as well as communication roles in healthcare, finance, information technology, government and the non-profit sector.
Programme requirement: An acceptable UTME score and credit passes in five SSC subjects, including English Language, Mathematics and three arts or social science subjects, in not more than two sittings.
JAMB subjects: English and any three relevant subjects.
Programme requirement: Five SSC credit passes including English Language and Mathematics, plus one of: a merit pass in a diploma in Mass Communication, Journalism or a related discipline; two relevant passes at Advanced Level; passes in two major relevant subjects in the NCE; or two passes at JUPEB or IJMB. Direct Entry is a three-year programme.
